How can people be so cruel and uncaring about animals? It just makes me so mad I can't even see straight.
My mom and I were on our way to take our walk by the creek and then up the mountain tonight, like we've been doing for the past few weeks. Tonight as we turned onto the road that takes you back to the Lykens Glen we noticed a Collie walking along the road. I started to slow down because obviously I didn't want to hit the poor thing. But as we got closer to it, it looked like it was having a hard time walking. At first I thought she might have already been hit or hurt or attacked by something. So of course I knew I had to stop and help the poor thing. My mom wanted me to be cautious and not get out right away because she didn't know if it would attack or anything. But of course I go into Super Protective Animal Rescuer Mode right away and I got out. If nothing else just to try and get her off the road so she wouldn't be hit.
Well, I don't think this poor creature could have attacked anyone if she tried. The first thing I noticed was that the nails were super long and some of them curling over like they hadn't been cut in forever. And then as I began to pet her, you could feel the ribcage and the bones in her back sticking out. Obviously the dog was extremely neglected. We had cat food along to feed the trout in the reservoir, (don't ask. lol) and we were trying to get her to eat and I was trying to give her some water from my waterbottle, but she wouldn't take anything. So the whole time I'm saying that we have to do something or call someone, but my mom didn't know who to call since we don't have a local SPCA. So at that point I said I would stay there with the dog and she could go home or get someone to help.
But in the meantime when I was trying to feed the dog and get her to lay down and rest, there was a couple on their bikes and and older couple who also saw the dog and my mom was talking to them. I guess they knew this Bonnie lady who takes care of cats and would be able to help the dog and they called her. The older couple also brought the dog a bowl of water but she still wouldn't drink.
At this point I finally got the dog to sit down and stop wandering aimlessly and I sat down with her on the ground. So all of the sudden, this white car pulls up and it's got this sheild emblem on the side that said New York something-or-other on it. So I'm thinking, oh awesome, it's an animal rescuer or something like that. But the THING that got out of the car was anything but.
Let me paint the picture for you... This man was fucking GROSS. He was very obese and his shirt was stained and had holes in it. His sweatpants were split up the back, so much so that when he bent over you could see EVERYTHING and he most definitely was NOT wearing underwear. This man couldn't even take care of himself, let alone this poor dog that he claimed was his.
At this point the older couple and my mom had all gathered around me and the dog on the ground. The man comes up to me and my mom asks him if it's his dog. He said it was and that he didn't know how she got down there. He kept calling the her to come to him, but the dog didn't want to go to him. Can't imagine why. He claimed that the dog was old and had just been really sick lately. But to me, that dog didn't look old, and the only reason he looked sicked was from beeing so badly neglected for so long. Even if the dog was old and sick, there was no reason for it's nails to be so long she could barely walk, no?
The guy also looked kinda nervous the whole time. I just knew he was saying that because he didn't wanna get busted. I'm kicking myself for not saying anything. I mean, the poor thing didn't want to leave my side. She kept looking at me like, "Don't make me go with him. Don't let him take me." and I didn't say anything. I mean, I knew that either way I was still gonna call somebody and report him after he left, but I didn't confront him right then and there and call him on his bullshit. We all watched him pick her up and put her into the car because she was too weak to get in by herself. (And he had both front doors open and she tried to jump out the opposite side.)
That Bonnie person did show up after he left and she said that she was going to report him, thank GOD. But I just wish I would have opened my mouth and spoke up for this poor dog who couldn't speak for itself. Nobody else did either, but that doesn't make it okay. I can take some comfort in knowing that I got her off the road so she wouldn't get hit, but I can't believe I just handed her right back over to the vile piece of shit that did this to her in the first place, no questions asked. I FAIL AT LIFE.
Sorry so long and ramble-y. I just needed to get it all out.
